The pursuit of prosperity through gold mining is a pervasive theme in my family. My father and uncles have all been involved in artisanal small-scale mining, either in the past or continuing to this day in the Brazilian Amazon. Through my familial ties, I have strived to gain a nuanced understanding of this specific group of people who rely solely on gold mining for their livelihood, rather than simply generalizing them as environmental destroyers. These efforts have led me to closely examine the complex dynamics of extractivism in the Amazon and its global interconnections.
